BABY SHOW (Mothers Instinct - Northwest Premier Baby Show )= DISAPPOINTMENT but lessons leant

Disappointed – but lesions learnt by Gill Martin, Lead Sonographer & Manager at First Choice Baby Scan, Warrington.       www.firstchoicebabyscan.co.uk

Sunday 15th July saw the Mother’s Instinct Northwest Premier Baby Show at Gulliver’s World, Warrington.

Having visited a previous event hosted by this company in 2011 I jumped at the chance of investing a little bit extra finance and sponsoring the show to be held in Warrington- our local town. After all Anna Stocks (the event organiser) had promised that this would guaranteed we were the only Ultrasound scan company represented at the show ….. plus we would be able to recoup some of our investment by performing scans  at the show (as other scan companies had done at their previous shows ).
Once signed up and finances paid communication to us from Anna was very sparse. On reflection I should have sensed a problem after all the previous shows had seemed a success. An e-mail communication a week prior to the show included a room plan – so all exhibitors knew where their stand was. All sponsors appeared to have prime position close to the entrance – but still no communication on where I was going to perform the ultrasound examinations.  Being a local to Warrington I spent the week prior looking for any local advertising of this event… to no avail!
The day of the show arrived and we met by some very rude Gulliver’s World staff that obviously had no idea that the show was being held there that day and tried to insist that we pay park entrance fees! Finally we were shown to the venue which was a very dimly light hall which was in need of quite substantial TLC (at least a lick of paint would have made some improvement) it was the sort of place that if I was to go as a potential customer I would have taken 1 glance then said a big “no thank you!”. I did not think I would feel more disappointed but I was mistaken. Our “prime position” was a pokey corner which people could easily bypass. But at least we had a plus socket! The exhibitors’ next to me had to wait 1 1/2  hours for an extension lead; only for it to be extended in front of a fire exit to the Gulliver’s World staff stating “it will be alright”…. They obviously Health & Safety / Fire Regulations have not made it that far!
When I finally bumped into Anna and introduced myself she quickly stated that there was nowhere for me to scan! Can you imagine… I tried to remain professional but underneath a volcano was bubbling.
The footfall to the show was slow to say the least – maybe because it had not been advertised; not even in the park on day of show! Anna tried to blame the nice weather… but if people are not aware of events they will not go.

But on a bright note we did take a couple of bookings and we stopped any other scan company “invading our turf”. Speaking to other exhibitors we all felt the same. We had all been promised certain things which had not materialised; we’d all been lead by half truths and false promises.  Another sponsor of the show (Warrington Day Nursery) had been promised that they would be the only childcare provider present – only to find that there were at least 3 others!
The show was supposed to finish at 16:00, but around 15:00 Anna walked around and told everyone that they could start “packing away now”. She claimed that there had been over 300 attendances (not that I or the other exhibitors had seen anywhere near this number) , of which she had their contact details and she would e-mail the list to myself later on that week. Yes you’ve guessed it I’m still waiting a month later.

Anyway have I learnt anything from this disappointment?
The answer is a BIG YES!

Sponsoring a Baby Show can be a big expense and FIRST CHOICE BABY SCAN is not adverse to this. However in future before parting with our cash so easily we will insist on a written contract. In this would be clear outlines of the benefits of being a sponsor, whether we will be scanning on the day, and where the show will be advertised.
A disappointing experience is a learning point and you need to look for the positive aspects to grow.

19 Weeks pregnant

At 19/40 baby is  swallowing amniotic fluid, and the kidneys continue to make urine. Hair on the scalp is sprouting, too. Sensory development reaches its peak this week. The nerve cells serving each of the senses – taste, smell, hearing, seeing and touch – are developing in their specialised areas of the brain. Nerve cell production slows down as existing nerve cells grow larger and make more complex connections. You may begin to feel baby moving around this point

In England (on the NHS) you should of been offered a fetal anomaly scan....it is recommended that this is performed between 18-20+6/40. The purpose of the scan is to check baby's growth and inspect baby for problems. Ultrasound is good but can not pick up all pathology....so please remember a "normal" scan does not exclude some pathology (especially chromosomal abnormalities or cardiac / heart defects).
There are minimum standards / views your anomaly scan should document...these are:-
  1.  Head Circumference = measurement of the head, and the posterior horns of the lateral ventricles of the brain ....this allows the Sonographer to assess for hydrocephaly (water on the brain) amongst other things

2.  Abdominal circumference - a measurement around baby's tummy
3. Femoral length - a measurement of thigh bone
Other things which are assessed during this scan include : - the posterior fossa of the brain, 4 chamber heart and out flow tracts, stomach, kidneys, bladder, abdominal wall (where the cord goes in), face / lips, spine and limbs.

The Gender of your baby is not part of the fetal anomaly check - however in most hospital if you ask the Sonographer they will look for you.....just remember no Sonographer will give you a guarantee!

IF YOU HAVE MISSED YOUR FETAL ANOMALY CHECK or RING US TODAY!!

We will be happy to perform this check, and maybe we will also be able to get a glimpse of baby in 4D too....

17 weeks pregnant - Gender Scan

At 17/40 your baby is now nearly 11cm long from crown to rump and weighs about 140g. The skeleton is mostly rubbery cartilage, but will start to harden as the weeks go by. A protective substance called myelin slowly begins to wrap around the spinal cord. Sweat glands are starting to develop all over the body. Just as the grows bigger, the umbilical cord, the lifeline to the placenta, is growing stronger and thicker, too.

At this stage in pregnancy we can begin to accurately assess fetal gender.

IT'S A BOY!

First Choice Baby Scan at the first Cheshire Baby and Childrens Show 16/04/2011

Cheshire Baby & Childrens Fair took place at Winsford's Lifestyle Centre on 16th April 2011, and First Choice Baby Scan was very happy to exhibit here. It took off to quite a shacky start, despite having booked a specific stall from plan provided by organisor on arrival there was a free for all for the prime pitch. Eventually we got our stall set up and were ready for the public. "Footfall" on the day was slow but steady (it was a lovely sunny day out side!). There was a good selection of different companies representated, and live demonstrations. Would I recommend that they do anything different ? We'll my husband (who I'd volunteered to help out on my stall that day) suggested that something serving snacks (hot dogs, drinks or even BBQ if out door event) would have gone down great!
Thanks must be givern to Alisha our receptionist for all her good effort and work :-). Plus to my husband (Joe) and my 2 x daughters who were good little helpers on the day!
